Homeschoolers in Uproar About New Restrictive Education Act

The new Education Act in Victoria, if passed, will require parents who educate their children at home to register with state authorities. The Home Education Network is attacking this new act, and has won the support of Liberty Victoria.

The act, which will not be introduced in Parliament for another year, will impose strict regulations on homeschooling. The new act would require the creating of a new body called the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority. The body's sole existence will be to grant school registration, set minimum standards for schools, and have the power to cancel registration for homeschooling if parents refuse to allow it to inspect the education program being used.

Liberty Victoria is urging the Government to maintain the current laws, and has expressed specific concern that the proposed changes authorize administrative interference without specifying the nature of it.
