Are Homeschoolers Retreating from Society?

Vol. 80, Prg. 6-10
January 28-February 1, 2008

A recent study indicated that homeschool graduates are more civically involved than the general population—and it’s obvious even to the average observer that homeschoolers are having a disproportionate impact on the world around them. The fact is, by temporarily withdrawing their children from the distractions of traditional school, homeschool parents are providing them with the tools they need to effectively engage the culture when they graduate. Yet critics claim that homeschoolers are retreating from society. This week on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith shows how the primary motivation for homeschooling is also the reason why homeschoolers are on the leading edge of cultural influence. He answers difficult questions such as, “Is it okay if my kids don’t go to youth group? Can parents spend ‘too much time’ with their children? Does homeschooling actually help society?” Learn how you can respond to common misconceptions about homeschooling with the simple truth: homeschoolers are at the forefront of the battle for the culture.
